Yoga in the Workplace?

Published on 15 Sep 2008

Yoga is becoming more and more popular these days and while attending an actual class is the ideal, there are many benefits to be received by simply adding a few yoga poses to your workday. For most people the idea of yoga at work conjures up images of 'downward dogs' in business suits, people chanting mantras, and an office full of overly spiritual yogi gurus. While this thought is quite entertaining, it is a far cry from the real picture of yoga practice in the workplace.

Breathing is the foundation of any good yoga practice. We breathe without thinking, but if we can learn to breathe consciously, then the benefits are enormous. Deep breathing relaxes the entire body and helps focus the mind. It can also be incredibly energizing during an exhausting work day. Different types of yoga breath can produce different results in the body and it can be done anywhere in the workplace.

Stretching is another mainstay of yoga and the benefits may be surprising. There are numerous yoga poses that can be done in a standing or sitting position which can relieve tension in areas like the back, neck, and wrists. When we stretch we relax the muscles and we help to increase blood flow in our bodies. This increased flow carries more white blood cells to our muscles, joints, and organs which in turn speeds up the natural healing process. A mini stretch session in the office or employee lounge can lead to a more productive and pain-free work day.

Imagine coming home from a long day of work feeling energized and mentally focused instead of sluggish and drained. With a few tried and tested yoga moves you can 'Om' away your stressful day and have the energy and stamina to enjoy some quality 'me' time after the closing bell.
